What is a domain name?
An addressing construct used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet. Domain names provide a system of easy-to-remember Internet addresses, which can be translated by the Domain Name System (DNS) into the numeric addresses (Internet Protocol (IP) numbers) used by the network. A domain name is hierarchical and often conveys information about the type of entity using the domain name. A domain name is simply a label that represents a domain, which is a subset of the total domain name space. Domain names at the same level of the hierarchy must be unique. Thus, for example, there can be only one .COM at the top-level of the hierarchy, and only one networksolutions.com at the next level of the hierarchy.

What does "delegating" a domain name mean?
This is the process of making your name "visible" on the Internet. A name that has been reserved is not automatically "on" the Internet - it's just no longer available for purchase to other people. The process of delegating a domain involves telling the system where to look for that domain by nominating DNS servers and their IP addresses. Note that the DNS servers must have been modified to account for the domain being delegated before you update the domains' record to point to those DNS servers. Typically your ISP or web-hosting organisation will advise you of the names of the relevant DNS servers and their IPs, or undertake this step for you. |
|
Which characters are allowed in the names?
Domain names are always lowercase, and can include numbers and dashes [as in the "-" symbol] The name cannot begin or end in this symbol. |
|
What do I do if I registered a domain name by accident?
Unfortunately every domain name registered requires StarkHost to pay the respective Registry a fee which is non-refundable. As such we cannot offer refunds on mistakes made during the registration process, unless a StarkHost consultant is responsible. |

What is DNS?
DNS stands for "Domain Name Server." The domain name server acts like a large telephone directory in that it's the master database, which associates a domain name such as (http://www.mydomain.com) with the appropriate IP number. Consider the IP number something similar to a phone number: When someone calls http://www.webarama.com.au, your ISP looks at the DNS server, and asks "how do I contact webarama.com.au?" The DNS server responds, it can be found at: 161.58.209.231. As the Internet understands it, this can be considered the phone number for the server, which houses the http://www.webarama.com.au web site. |
